Ikon offers a limited number of voluntary work experience opportunities. Please see below for department specific opportunities.
If you would like to apply for work experience, please complete the application form and Equal Opportunity Questionnaire and return either via email or post. Only applications made on these forms will be considered and we do not require any additional information.
Please make sure that you complete all sections and that your application form is well presented. We would recommend that you word process your application form. Remember that Royal Mail charges for postage based on size and weight and if you fail to apply the correct postage, your application may not reach us.
Applications will be reviewed by departments twice a year. The first deadline is at the end of June; the second is at the end of December. Any successful placements offered will fall within the 6 months that follow the application deadline (for example, if you submit your application before the June deadline, a placement could fall at any time between June and December that year). Placements will usually involve working 1-2 days per week over a period of 8-12 weeks.
Due to the very high volume of applications that we receive, we are only able to contact shortlisted candidates.
Experience within this department will involve working with the Exhibitions team in the development and delivery of Ikon’s artistic programme. Typical duties may include providing administrative support such as exhibition filing, updating databases and lists of works, logging artist proposals, archiving, research for forthcoming exhibitions and preparing for departmental meetings. Exhibition placements will have the opportunity to work on exhibition planning and preparation through to project realisation during installation. Placements are also encouraged to lead an exhibition tour with the support from the Exhibitions and Front of House teams.
Experience within this department will involve supporting the Learning team in their work towards workshops, tours and talks as well as the production of interpretive material. Duties may also include research and project planning, attending internal meetings, and general administrative support, whilst observing a range of learning events. You may also bring specific skills with you that you wish to utilise such as project documentation, workshop leadership or engagement through Learning with specific social groups.
Experience within this department will involve observing and supporting all aspects of the Marketing, Press & Development teams’ activity including website management, events planning and assistance, press liaison, processing press cuttings, database updates, mail-outs and distribution, attending meetings with internal and external contacts and general administrative support.
Experience within this department will enable an overview of how the organisation operates and will involve assisting with a wide variety of tasks with a focus on administrative duties. Past activity includes data entry, word processing letters and emails, personnel support, helping at events, attending a wide variety of meetings, minute taking, post processing and general office assistance.
Experience within this department offers practical experience in a wide range of aspects relating to building management as well as exhibition and event installations. This involves active participation in building maintenance; using ICT applications for both system monitoring and creative tasks e.g. environmental control or editing audio and video content; and assisting with gallery exhibition planning and installation. This opportunity requires enthusiasm for working within a hands-on, operations led department.
