Ava are an Anglo-Persian group that perform a fusion of Persian vocals, accompanied by kora and flamenco guitar. Usually a five-piece group, with violin, flute and hand percussion, they have been performing as a duet during the Covid-19 pandemic. Mina Fatemi, sings in her native language, Farsi, with an emotive and poetic delivery that never fails to move the audience. Guitarist, John Berry, has an extensive history of musical collaborations, having played in Salmagundi, a World Music ensemble, as well as with Sura Susso, a West African griot from The Gambia. This concert is in association with Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham.
Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham works through the arts to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions that refugees make to Birmingham and more widely the UK. They work collaboratively with artists in exile and local communities to build relationships, share cultural identities and provide opportunities for our artists to perform, network and develop their careers in Birmingham. Celebrating Sanctuary events celebrate the tradition of offering sanctuary in the UK to those fleeing persecution, affirming the message that sanctuary is a human right.
This event is part of The Migrant Festival 2021.
