Join us for an outdoor creative workshop led by Birmingham artist Sally Butcher, focusing on the subject of families, motherhood and mothers.

In this printmaking session, families experiment with a range of domestic materials and childhood toys to make unique prints to take home. The activity aims to encourage families to play together and celebrate the pivotal role of motherhood within society. This workshop is organised in response to Mothers, a group exhibition at Ikon in the 1990s that explored motherhood and mothers.

This is a live workshop, taking place outside in a Covid-safe environment. This event is open to all families and aimed at all ages. It is free to attend but advance booking is needed. All materials provided. If you have any access requirements for the session, please let us know by emailing learning@ikon-gallery.org.

This workshop is supported by Brindleyplace. Ikon’s Learning Programme is supported by Cass Art. Please consider making a donation for this free activity. Ikon is a registered charity and your support helps us with everything we do.

About the artist

Sally Butcher is an artist, lecturer and researcher based in Birmingham, UK. Her work has been exhibited in group shows nationally and internationally and is held in public and private collections. Butcher’s current research project, Re.conceive: Investigating the Invisibility of Infertility in the Visual Arts funded by Arts Council England, seeks to challenge naturalised reproduction and reframe the narrative of normative motherhood with representations of the sub-maternal. Through this project, she has been featured in Elephant magazine, Maternal Art, Mothers Who Make, Artist Mother Podcast, Female Photographers and M.A.M.A. at Procreate Project (forthcoming). Her essay ‘Ma – Reframing the Representation of the Maternal Subject in the (Negative) Space of (M)otherhood’ is due to be published in the anthology ‘An Artist and A Mother’ next year.
