Located in The Mailbox, a city centre ‘shopping and leisure’ complex, Lift Corridor was the ongoing acoustic self-reflection of an architectural space. Essentially unremarkable, the corridor itself was in-between an escalator and an elevator, a place to move through rather that to arrive at, and so the fugitive nature of Cunningham’s work could not have been more appropriate. The sounds of people walking and talking were absorbed into a wave of ambient noise, rising and breaking in a cycle of crescendo and diminuendo, in real time. Challenging conventional notions of artistic authorship, modestly and radically, this work was absolutely dependent on its context.
