The Office of Useful Art

20 May — 1 June 2014

Events Room

Ikon welcomes The Office of Useful Art to Birmingham. Visitors are invited to join the Asociación de Arte Útil (Useful Art Association), a membership organisation that promotes and implements Arte Útil or Useful Art.

The Asociación, initiated by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera in 2012 has evolved into a growing international movement, promoting ways in which art can imagine, create and implement socially beneficial outcomes.

For Ikon The Office of Useful Art is a place to take part in workshops and discussions, a place to read, listen, join in debates or make things. A daily programme of activities will be listed on the website in the events calendar.  The Office will be open for visitors to use as a communal lunch space with tea made from a tea urn designed by Jeremy Deller and Alan Kane every day 12.30-1.30pm.

Help build the Useful Art Association by visiting and becoming a member, whether as an individual or with a school, college or community group. To get involved or to book the space for your meeting contact Emma Bowen at e.bowen@ikon-gallery.org or call 0121 248 0708. Please note public access may be restricted during booked sessions.

During 2014–2015 the Useful Art Association will develop useful art initiatives in four locations with MIMA, Tate Liverpool, Ikon Gallery and Grizedale Arts plus European partners.

This project  was made possible with the support of the Culture Fund of the European Union and Arts Council England.
