Ikon has partnered with Overhear for the Birmingham Literature Festival 2019. Newly commissioned poems and prose have been written about well-loved, independent city venues, including Yorks Café, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and Ikon.
Local poet and writer Garrie Fletcher has written and recorded a piece inspired by Ikon. He says ‘I like Ikon. I like that it’s a repurposed space. It used to be a school and it’s still educational. It’s got strong links with schools and its exhibitions are quite challenging. There is going to be stuff here that some people might say is that art? Why is that here?’
‘I think there’s something very exciting and powerful about being in the space that the story is set. Some writers might find that constricting but I find it quite liberating. I know where it’s set and I know what I’ve got to include so that’s two questions answered.’
