Ron Terada

Canadian artist Ron Terada produced a permanent new work for Ikon as well as a project as part of the gallery’s innovative offsite programme.

Terada’s practice explores language, signage and advertising. For the main entrance to Ikon, the artist has produced IKON (2006), a glitzy, Vegas-inspired sign, to greet our visitors.

Stay Away from Lonely Places Stay Away from Lonely Places (2005) was a large, white neon sign that was mounted onto The Chapel & Sunday School in Birmingham’s Eastside regeneration district. In essence a warning, it also conveys a poignant melancholy, a lingering presence particularly visible during the evenings and night time, when the surrounding factories and offices are closed for business.

Who I think I Am
Ikon’s exhibition with Canadian artist Ron Terada is his first solo presentation in Europe. Typically it involves a deadpan reproduction of texts drawn from a wide range of sources including street signage, popular music and advertising. The exhibition title and selection of work suggests a self-portrait of sorts, but one in which the artist himself is never actually glimpsed.
