A Small Bit of Earth

Performance

Join us for a celebratory performance by artist in residence Roo Dhissou marking the closing of our Break the Mould exhibition.

A Small Bit of Earth is a closing ritual that sits alongside Roo Dhissou’s residency at Ikon Gallery, extending the material and conceptual language of Heal, Home, Hmmm. Performed with long-term collaborator Oliver Romoff, the work unfolds as a 40-minute live sound composition, activated from outside the pavilion in the wider gallery space, with opportunities for audience participation.

Using taus, voice, tanpura, clay objects, water, singing bowls, and sustained drones, the performance moves through cycles of making, holding, erosion, and return. Sound is treated as architectural, circulating the space rather than addressing the audience directly.

Reflecting on home as something fragile, provisional, and continually remade, the work draws on bell hooks’ writing on “homeplace” as a site for care, rest, and resistance.
