Since September 2015 Ikon and five Birmingham primary schools have explored the gallery’s exhibitions by Vanley Burke, Fiona Banner, Dinh Q. Lê and Janet Mendelsohn as part of the Creative Connections programme. The children, aged 4–10, made their own artwork responding to their visits to Ikon, looked at themes of heritage and identity at school with local artists, and worked towards an Arts Award Explore. Ikon now hosts a weekend showcase of the children’s artwork, curated and promoted by young ambassadors from each school – Gossey Lane, Hillstone, The Oval, Audley and Brownmead Academy.
