
Artist’s Talk: Mahtab Hussain, Guy Gunaratne & Ali Roche
Join us for an artist’s talk with Mahtab Hussain, artist; Guy Gunaratne, a British novelist and playwright; and Ali Roche, newly appointed Director of LUX. During this event they discuss the collaborative film Here is the Brick (2025) in Hussain’s current Ikon exhibition and his wider artistic practice. This event includes a book signing with Mahtab Hussain.
Mahtab Hussain’s exhibition What Did You Want To See? (20 March – 1 June) is commissioned by Ikon and Photoworks and supported by the John Feeney Charitable Trust and Freelands Foundation.
About the speakers
British artist Mahtab Hussain explores the important relationship between identity, heritage and displacement. His themes develop through long-term research articulating a visual language that challenges the prevailing concepts of multiculturalism.
Guy Gunaratne is a British novelist and playwright. Winner of the Dylan Thomas Prize, the Jhalak Prize and longlisted for the Booker, Goldsmith’s and the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction.
Ali Roche has recently taken up post as Director of LUX and is outgoing Chief Curator at Nottingham Contemporary. She has previously held roles including Head of Commissions at Spike Island in Bristol. At LUX, she leads on the organisations strategic vision including a continued commitment to research, advocacy, artist development and circulation of artist’s moving image within the field of contemporary art.
