Clay, yarn and ink: The interplay between heritage crafts and contemporary art

This half day symposium reflects on Ikon’s trilogy of exhibitions – Break the Mould (2026), Thread the Loom (2025) and Start the Press! (2024) – exploring the dynamic intersection between heritage crafts and contemporary art practice.

All three exhibitions were supported by Jerwood Foundation, enabling the transformation of Ikon’s galleries into a functioning studio where artists performed their craft in real time. With additional support from Freelands Foundation, young people have had the opportunity to practice printmaking, weaving and ceramics, making public the true value of visual art education.

In dialogue with academic, artist and youth partners, this symposium asks urgent questions about the health of art school facilities in the West Midlands, and the critical role played by artist cooperatives in safeguarding heritage practices as part of a wider visual, social and ecological function.

Start the Press!
The centrepiece of Start the Press! is a vintage, flatbed printing press from Wolverhampton School of Art, taking its position in the gallery as a form of protest or occupation in the tradition of the student art-school sit-ins of the 1960s, and in response to the current challenging economic landscape. A cohort of West Midlands printmakers will operate the press, producing original prints and filling the gallery walls as work is made in real time.

Thread the Loom
Ikon presents a group exhibition celebrating the art of weaving. An AVL Studio Dobby loom, on loan from Birmingham City University (BCU), will be activated through a series of micro-residencies with West Midlands weavers Chantelle Folarin, Mahawa Keita, Clare Langford, Andrée Walker, Theo Wright and BCU students. Textiles produced on the loom will be exhibited alongside work by contemporary artists Raisa Kabir, Alis Oldfield, Bharti Parmar, Dinah Prentice and Su Richardson.
