Join Aurella Yussuf, writer and art historian, for a free tour of Ikon’s exhibition, Donald Locke: Resistant Forms.
Born and raised in Guyana, Donald Locke moved to the UK in 1954 as part of the Windrush Generation. The exhibition includes early ceramics inspired by natural forms and the human body, and larger scale paintings and sculptures exploring issues around history and identity.
Organised by Ikon in collaboration with Spike Island, Bristol and Camden Art Centre, London with support from the Estate of Donald Locke. The exhibition is generously supported by The Ampersand Foundation, Henry Moore Foundation, the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Alison Jacques and the Estate of Donald Locke.
About the speaker
Aurella Yussuf is a writer and art historian who focuses on Black artists in Britain and beyond, with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art and its cultural and historical contexts. She is a founding member of the interdisciplinary art collective Thick/er Black Lines, which has presented projects at venues including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Somerset House and Project Row Houses (Houston, USA). Yussuf is currently undertaking a PhD in Art History at the University of Birmingham, researching the relationships between Black artists, public institutions and the global art market. She is co-creator of the Blk Art Map, an online guide to Black art exhibitions in Britain, and from 2019–2022 she convened Kitchen Table Crit, a peer forum for Black artists, writers and curators.
