Gathering Threads, Sounds and Stories

Ikon Gallery stays open late and invites visitors to experience a memorable evening of music, discussion and sharing as we celebrate the end of our summer exhibitions, Thread the Loom and Seulgi Lee: SPAN.

The evening begins with a 30minute concert of music by two percussionists Julian Warburton and Simon Limbrick, inspired by Seulgi Lee’s exhibition SPAN, presented by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group (BCMG), including pieces by composers John Cage, Toshio Hosokawa and Younghi Pagh-Paan.

This is followed by an informal walk through Thread the Loom, with a chance to view work from five weaving residencies undertaken by West Midlands artists: Chantelle Folarin, Mahawa Keita, Clare Langford, Andrée Walker and Theo Wright.

We close the evening with a panel discussion with artists Seulgi Lee, Bharti Parmar, Andrée Walker and Gugan Gill, chaired by Daphne Chu, Ikon Curator. The group discuss and journey through different ecologies of practice, their experiences of weaving and the crossovers between craft and contemporary art.

Ikon Youth Programme (IYP) also showcase their interventions on the hand loom.

Thread the Loom is supported by Jerwood Foundation, Cotton Textiles Research Trust, The Saintbury Trust and Freelands Foundation.

Seulgi Lee’s exhibition SPAN is made possible by lead supporter Bagri Foundation, with additional support from Ikon lead benefactor ai. gallery; Korea Artist Prize Promotion Fund, from SBS Foundation and National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; and Trampoline, Association in support of the French art scene, Paris. The artist is represented by Gallery Hyundai, Seoul, and Galerie Jousse Entreprise, Paris.
