With Black Country Type

Join us for an Instagram Live event with artist Tom Hicks, more commonly known as Black Country Type, and Tegen Kimbley, Communications Assistant, Ikon.

Tune in to Ikon Shop to hear more about Hicks’ practice and how he captures the urban landscape, applying a colourful aesthetic to an overlooked region.

Tom Hicks also participates in Ikon’s Winter Craft Market on Thursday 1 December, 5.30-8.30pm, or shop online for Black Country Type prints here.

About the Speakers

Tom Hicks is the artist behind the documentary photography project Black Country Type. His work explores the post-industrial landscape of the region, focusing on words, typography, handmade lettering and signs. His work has been published and exhibited regionally, most recently in the book I.D.S.T (2020) and a solo exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery (2020). In 2021 Hicks collaborated with the poet Liz Berry on the book The Dereliction

Tegen Kimbley, photographer, has collaborated with Tom Hicks on projects including Wednesbury Through the Lens (2022) and Yam Cams (2021). Exploring environments, manmade or natural, she documents the objects and people that inhabit them, creating narratives around the everyday and over-looked. Tegen Kimbley is Communications Assistant at Ikon.
