With Diego Marcon and Christopher Beanland. At Midlands Arts Centre.

Monelle (2017), 16:02 minutes. Directed by Diego Marcon.

Smooth Talk (1985), 1 hour 32 minutes. Directed by Joyce Chopra.

The afternoon includes a feature screening of Smooth Talk, a 1985 film selected by Marcon starring Laura Dern as a 15-year-old teen who is approached by a mysterious and dangerous stranger.

This event is generously supported by the Italian Cultural Institute.

Biographies

Diego Marcon’s films, videos and installations consider the relationship between reality and representation. They make connections between theoretical discourse on the ontology of the moving image and popular forms of genre cinema and television, such as horror. His film Monelle (2017) has been screened in public galleries and film programmes, including Can a door be fascist? (Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 2021). His recent film, The Parents’ Room (2021) was screened during Directors’ Fortnight at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (2021) and presented in the 59th Venice Biennale, The Milk of Dreams (2022).

Christopher Beanland is the author of two novels The Wall in The Head (2019) and Spinning Out of Control (2014) and several non-fiction books including Concrete Concept – Brutalist Buildings Around the World (2016).
