Talk – Ikon and public health

Angela Kingston, curator at Ikon during the 1990s, revisits exhibitions documented in Ikon’s archive: Mothers (1990) and Clean/Dirty (1994). Informed by her research into anthropology and sociology, the exhibitions focused on art’s relationship to the political and social context. Kingston discusses her curatorial strategies for addressing HIV/AIDS as a public health emergency, and issues of discrimination with regards to disability and gender.

Angela Kingston is a freelance visual arts curator and writer. Exhibitions since 2013 include: 3am: Wonder, Paranoia and the Restless Night, the Bluecoat, Liverpool and tour, 2013-14; The First Humans, Pump House Gallery, London and tour, 2015-16; and Is This Planet Earth? Ty Pawb, Wrexham, and tour, 2018-19.
