Untitled (a retrospective view of the pathway)

Roger Hiorns

St Philip’s Cathedral
Colmore Row, Birmingham B3 2QB
Free entry, suggested donation £2*

Ikon and Birmingham Cathedral present a new site-specific work by Birmingham-born artist Roger Hiorns, Untitled (a retrospective view of the pathway) (2016).

Working with the choir of St Philip’s Cathedral, Birmingham, the event sees choristers undertake Choral Evensong whilst lying on their backs on the floor, within the nave of the church, rather than standing to sing in stalls behind the altar. This will be a full service rather than a performance – led by The Very Revd Catherine Ogle, Dean of Birmingham, and directed by Canon Marcus Huxley – with the congregation seated in the aisles and galleries. The event raises important questions concerning the aesthetics of faith and worship in modern life; plays with perceptions of life and death and sleep and consciousness; and re-imagines an ancient ritual, part of an establishment that defines our society – all within sight of the Cathedral’s stained glass windows by Edward Burne-Jones depicting the Last Judgment.

Places are free but should be booked. Please book online or call Ikon on 0121 248 0708. *Please consider making a donation when booking for this free event. Ikon is a registered charity and your support helps us with everything we do.

Please note that online booking closes at 10am on Wednesday 15 June.

Untitled (a retrospective view of the pathway) also takes place on Friday 17 June. This off-site work anticipates Ikon’s major exhibition with Roger Hiorns in December 2016.

You always have to think about materials and objects in terms of being malleable – you have to cut them off from what their established use is, to directly interfere with their world-ness. It becomes a process of human empowerment to re-use and re-propose the power of objects simply left lying in the street. Roger Hiorns
