Keith Piper transformed the lower gallery using photographic panels, slide projections, music, water and video installations. Three sequential installations – The Ghosts of Christendom, Rites of Passage and Fire Next Time – explored the complex relationship between people of African descent and Christianity; Christian morals set against the slave trade; and Black Christianity as it treads a fine line between political resistance and reactionary fundamentalism. This installation was specifically commissioned by Ikon.
