Art at HMP Grendon Showcase: From Night into Day

The Greenhouse Gallery, 7th Floor. Wolverhampton School of Art, University of Wolverhampton, Molineux Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 1DT*

Open Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm (excluding bank holidays)
Free entry, no need to book

This showcase presents artwork made by prison residents at HMP Grendon, Europe’s only wholly therapeutic prison, alongside work by students on the Fine Art Master’s course, University of Wolverhampton. Both groups undertook this project during the winter lockdown, reflecting on themes such as isolation and temporality, while receiving materials and creative resources through the post.

The project title, From Night into Day, is taken from a 1975 painting by Austrian Expressionist painter Marie-Louise von Motesiczky, which served as inspiration for the early stages of the project.

Dean Kelland, Ikon’s artist in residence at HMP Grendon, would like to thank all of the participants for their effort and insight through a very challenging period. This residency is funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust.

*To access The Greenhouse Gallery, please enter Wolverhampton School of Art via the front entrance and report to the reception desk.
