Tower Room exhibition.
Please note the Tower Room is only accessible via a number of steps.

Israeli/British artist Amikam Toren returns to Ikon with two film selections, Carrots (2008) and Refreshments (2009). Based on true stories, narratives of experience from the artist’s life, they are strangely moving tales touched with humour and edged with the surreal. They are filmic equivalents of vignettes, verbalised accounts superimposed onto unedited footage of locations where remembered events actually happened. These places, after the story-telling, are transformed from being unremarkable into sites of loaded melancholy.

Ikon presents the first European survey of work by Australian artist Tim Johnson (born 1947, Sydney). One of the most remarkable artists of our time, his curiosity and unpretentiousness are rare, and so too his smart knowingness with respect to artistic mannerisms.

Armchair Paintings
Amikam Toren
Armchair Paintings, the title of an ongoing series by Israeli/British artist Amikam Toren, is taken from Matisse’s knowing reference to paintings as essentially comforting and domestic. In Toren’s case, the work consists of cheap oils on canvas, purchased by him from second-hand shops and markets, then defaced as he cuts a stencilled text into the picture plane. Like the paintings, the texts are ready-mades appropriated from graffiti and improvised signage, often tough and sometimes offensive. At Ikon the painting were located in non-gallery spaces including the restaurant, stairwell and men’s toilet, quietly challenging conventional definitions of art, its material nature and notions of its proper place in the world.
