Love

Off-site installation
Fletchers Walk, Birmingham, B3 3HJ
Open Monday – Saturday, 7am-7pm. Free

Ikon shows a short video by acclaimed Estonian artist Marko Mäetamm in a disused shop unit in Fletchers Walk, central Birmingham, a space the gallery has occupied since December 2013 to present silent film works.

Love (2010) is characteristically inspired by Mäetamm’s family life. Set in the kitchen of his apartment, we see him professing undying love to his wife while she is clearly rushing to finish preparations for a meal. Her attempts to undertake a mundane chore are foiled by his intense romanticism. Occasional appearances of their children, unwitting extras in this down-home drama, only serve to enhance the absurd humour.

Ikon Icon 1980s
Cornelia Parker
In 1988 Ikon commissioned Cornelia Parker to make Thirty Pieces of Silver, a major installation now in the collection of Tate. She returns to Ikon to show Thirty Pieces of Silver (exhaled) (2003), a more recent work comprising thirty silver-plated items crushed by a 250 tonne industrial press. A kind of critical response to monumental floor-based sculpture, it also characteristically conflates ideas of preciousness and perceived cultural value with traces of a traumatic event.
