Mothers was a group exhibition that lifted the lid on motherhood and mothers. Fifteen artists (selected on submission from over three hundred applicants) made disarmingly honest – sometimes amusing and often touching – works about their feelings and experiences. Drawings, paintings, photographs, videos, installations and a performance explored a vast, largely unchartered and sometimes controversial territory.
Mothers ran concurrently with the exhibition Sacred Bonds at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, 22 September – 18 November 1990. Sacred Bonds took a searching look at the way artists throughout history – most of them men – have represented mothers.
