Dean Kelland, Ikonu2019s artist in residence at HMP Grendon; Richard Shuker, Head of Clinical Services, HMP Grendon and Jo Augustus, Lead Creative Psychotherapist, HMP Grendon, discuss the role of creative practice, the notion of community and the importance of group work at HMP Grendon in the context of the prisonu2019s radical approach to therapy, which informs the artist residency.nnKelland is Ikonu2019s artist in residence at HMP Grendon, Buckinghamshire. Funded by the Marie-Louise von Motesiczky Charitable Trust, the focus of the residency is towards the development of artistic practice at HMP Grendon u2013 that of Kelland and of the prisonu2019s communities.nnHMP Grendon operates a Democratic Therapeutic Community to provide group-based therapy within a social climate which promotes positive relationships, personal responsibility and social participation. Each wing is a u2018communityu2019 u2013 its inhabitants always referred to as u2018residentsu2019 u2013 operating a daily regime of art therapy, psychodrama and psychotherapy which leads to a reduction in the risk of reoffending for those who remain in treatment for more than 18 months.
